DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND WEEP. I AM NOT THERE. I DO NOT SLEEP. I AM THE THOUSAND WINDS THAT BLOW. I AM THE DIAMOND GLINTS ON SNOW. I AM THE SUN ON UNRIPENED GRAIN. I AM THE GENTLE AUTUMN'S RAIN. WHEN
YOU AWAKEN IN THE MORNING'S HUSH, DO
NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND CRY. Anonymous |

Christopher Joseph Pontier, 29, son of Gerald J. Pontier of Tyringham, MA and Carol Adams Bitov of NH, died Sunday, May 21, 2000 as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Route 495 in Andover. Born in Pittsfield, MA on July 12, 1970, he grew up in Meredith, NH and graduated from Inter-Lakes High School in 1989, where he was on the baseball team. He attended Plymouth State College. An avid fisherman, year-round, Chris also enjoyed skiing and flying his model planes. But his first love was baseball. Chris was employed for several years by Center Harbor Dock and Pier Company. In 1998, Chris moved to Boston where he worked as a Technical Assistant for Information Systems at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He played on the department's softball team and won the division championship two years in a row. The team topped the league again in 2001 and dedicated their trophy to Chris, their "angel in the outfield". For Chris, life was seldom easy, but he managed to pull himself up and away from the bad times and became a man we were all proud of. |

| Above all, Christopher loved his car! It was a used car, but he didn't care. It put him deeper into debt, but he didn't care. Parking in East Boston, where he lived, was a hassle, and the parking lot at MIT was expensive, but he didn't care. It was a silver Nissan 300ZX. It was his "dream car", so he didn't care. He took exceptionally good care of it. Except for the evening of May 21, 2000. Chris had spent that weekend at my wedding and was driving back to Boston with his girlfriend, Jen. They were both tired and had just eaten dinner with Chris' friend Bill at a restaurant in Exeter. A driver of a similar car cut Chris off on Route 495. | ||||

I was on my honeymoon in Hawaii when the my daughter called that Sunday night at 9:15. Chris was not drinking. He was not drunk. The road was dry. The weather was clear. The speedometer had stopped at approximately 115mph. Chris and Jen were thrown from the car as it rolled over an embankment, through trees, down a hill. Chris was killed instantly. He was 29. We will all miss him every day for the rest of our lives. Jen miraculously survived. |

We
all tend to think that bad things happen to "the other guy". Well, sometimes
we turn out to be that "other guy". My prayer is that every mother should
have a son as wonderful as Chris, and never lose him.
