Carmelina
M. Adams 1912 2011 PITTSFIELD Carmelina M. (Sangiovanni) Adams passed
away on September 5, 2011 at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility. Daughter
of the late Guiseppe and Rosina (Coiro) Sangiovanni, "Lena"
was born on February 5, 1912 and was a lifelong resident of Pittsfield,
most recently at Mt. Greylock Extended Care Facility. She was a member
of the Class of 1928 at Central High School, the last graduating class
before moving to the present Pittsfield High School. She married William
M. Adams on July 6, 1936. He died in 1977. An employee of General Electric
in Pittsfield for several years, Lena also operated a rooming house on
Willis Street for nearly 30 years. She was a longtime member of the Pittsfield
Senior Center where she enjoyed playing bridge, pinochle and pitch. At
a time when only men were given the privilege of an education and woman
were expected to tend the family, Lena cooked, cleaned and sewed nearly
all the clothes for her eight brothers and sisters and became a mother
to them when Rosina fell ill and died. She will be missed by everyone
who knew her, as she was devoted to her family and friends. She leaves
many friends at Providence Court, where she lived for ten years. Lena
is survived by two daughters, Carol Adams Bitov and her husband, Gadi
of Dover, N.H. and Joan A. DeSantis and her husband, Daniel of Pittsfield.
She was very proud of her three grandchildren, Carin Pontier D'Abrosca
of Nottingham, N.H., Deirdre M. DeSantis of Schoharie, N.Y., William DeSantis
of Franklin, Tenn., and her five great grandchildren. She leaves a sister,
Helen Sangiovanni Goyette of Pittsfield and several nieces and nephews.
Lena was predeceased by her brothers, Frank, Frederic, Dominic, Anthony
and Michael and her sisters, Florence DiCicco and Rosemary Gould and her
grandsons, Robert M. Carosso and Christopher J. Pontier. FUNERAL NOTICE:
